ACCOKEEK, Md. — Police are investigating after a gunshot was fired near a school bus stop before classes on Thursday in Prince George's County. Investigators believe someone tried to rob students waiting to go to school.
Officers with the Prince George's County Police Department were first called to the 15900 block of Livingston Road in Accokeek for the report of a gunshot in the area. Police say a group of teens were waiting at their school bus stop when someone tried to rob them. A spokesperson says one shot was fired into the air, but no one was hit. No injuries were reported.
Prince George's County Public Schools says the group of students were from Gwynn Park High School. Two students were reportedly approached by several people who took some of their property.
Surveillance video from a nearby Ring camera captures the sound of the gunshot. A car is seen speeding away just seconds before the school bus pulls up to the bus stop. One of the victims' mothers confirmed that one of the teens had their shoes taken. Although no one was hurt, she still can’t believe this happened.
“It was just scary for them," she said. "You try to prep kids for anything happening, but you never expect [this].”
As word of the incident spread, neighbors said they couldn’t believe the reason behind it. While some say this kind of violence doesn’t happen in the neighborhood, others say a disturbing pattern has started, and they’re concerned.
“Four months ago, one of our cars was stolen from the driveway, and then this is the second incident," revealed Laila Ramesh, who's lived in the neighborhood for almost 13 years. "Before then I never heard anything about this.”
Police are still investigating and are on the lookout for a blue Hyundai.
