GREENBELT, Md. -- A man approached a woman outside an office building in Greenbelt armed with a handgun Friday night, and killed her as she tried to get away, police said.
Greenbelt Police said their investigation showed the woman left an office building near the 6300 block of Ivy Lane just after 5 p.m. on Friday.
Police said she was approached by the suspect, who had a handgun, and the victim took off. She ran across the parking lot as the suspect followed her, shooting, police said.
At least one of the shots hit the victim in the head. Police said she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Late Friday night, police identified the woman killed as Bettie Jenifer, 44, of Bowie, Maryland.
"The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle described as blue in color, no further," George Mathews, the Greenbelt Police spokesperson, said in a release. "The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build and black hair, wearing a dark shirt and dark pants."
