3 charged with killing man in robbery before police chase involving two carjacked vehicles

Fernando Alvarenga Cuellar was found shot in Camp Springs. He died a few hours later at an area hospital.

CAMP SPRINGS, Md. — Officers chasing after two reportedly carjacked vehicles led to the arrest of a man and two 16-year-old boys. Now, all three suspects are facing second-degree murder charges as police say they killed a man before the chase began Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Prince George's County Police Department, 25-year-old Deandre Boyd and two 16-year-old boys are charged with the deadly shooting of 38-year-old Fernando Alvarenga Cuellar

The events unfolded shortly after 2:30 p.m. when police were called to the 4300 block of Ridgecrest Drive. When officers arrived, they found Cuellar shot outside. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died several hours later.

Investigators say two hours after Cuellar was shot, patrol officers in Oxon Hill received word of a reported armed carjacking on Fisher Road. While responding, officers say they saw the carjacked vehicle following another carjacked vehicle on St. Barnabas Road.

Officers reportedly tried to stop the stolen cars and a short police chase began. One of the two cars crashed a short time later near St. Barnabas Road and Wheeler Road. The driver, one of the 16-year-old boys, was taken into custody while other officers continued to follow the second carjacked vehicle, until it also crashed in Washington, D.C.

Both of the suspects in the second vehicle, Boyd and the other 16-year-old boy, allegedly tried to run after the crash but were taken into custody.

Police say two guns were found in the carjacked vehicles.

While investigating the carjackings, investigators connected the three suspects to the deadly shooting of Cuellar. Detectives say Cuellar appeared to have been shot during an attempted robbery.

The man and two teens did not know Cuellar before he was killed. All three have been charged with first and second-degree murder, carjacking, and other charges.

The teen in the car that crashed in Prince George's County remains in custody at the county's Department of Corrections while the other two suspects await extradition from D.C.
