WASHINGTON — Sunday was a violent night for young people in Southeast D.C.
There were three separate shootings in Southeast D.C. that left two dead and three others injured – including a young boy.
Here's a breakdown of Sunday night's violence:
8:45 p.m.
Two young people were killed in a shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed Monday afternoon.
Around 8:45 p.m., officers responded to the 2700 block of Langston Place, Southeast for the report of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a boy and a man who had been shot.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported the victims to area hospitals for treatment where they later died from their injuries.
The victims were identified Monday as 15-year-old Demarcos Pinkney, of Southeast, D.C., and 17-year-old Kevin Mason, of Southeast, D.C.
Demarcos’ mother tells WUSA9 that he was a football player on the inaugural team at Digital Pioneers Academy, and he was one of the students who pushed for the program. The two boys were cousins and were part of several after-school programs. According to neighbors, they weren’t the type to get in any kind of trouble.
Alicia Batchelor lives in the apartment right in front of the deadly shooting. The mother of a one-year-old girl said she heard the gunshots and dropped immediately to the floor. She says she feels the grief of the two sisters who each lost their son.
“I hear a mother’s cries for her son, it’s heartbreaking man,” she explained. “It’s an emotional rollercoaster. It’s traumatic.”
She says the Langston Place community has long felt ignored and forgotten.
“You can’t even bring your child out to play on the porch or get some fresh air,” she said, “because you have to worry about if you’re moving fast enough for a gun bullet.”
Police said the gunfire shattered apartment windows in the area.
No information on the circumstances of the shooting has been released.
The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 for each homicide, bringing the total reward amount in this case up to $50,000 to anyone that provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.
