WASHINGTON — Ward 8 commissioners are coming together following the arrest of DC Councilman Trayon White. The group of city leaders met for about an hour in Southeast Wednesday. They say right now they say the goal is to pull all the other commissioners together to find a plan of action for the remaining months of the year — whether there’s a new councilmember stepping in, or if White returns.
“It’s our responsibility to step up in times of crisis,” Chairperson of Advisory Board Commission 8C Salim Adofo said.
On Wednesday, Ward 8 leaders said unity is what will keep things together for this community. This is after Ward 8 councilman Trayon White was arrested Sunday and is facing bribery charges.

“I’m not making no excuses for councilmember White, but until he’s convicted, tried by law, convicted by a jury, he’s innocent,” said former ANC Paul Trantham.
Commissioner Salim Adofo says while they wait for the legal process to play out, they’re focused on making sure services are still available for residents.
“We can’t fill in for the councilmember,” Adofo said. “What we can do is make sure we’re the best commissioners we can be, work with the other at large council members and chair.”
Some people have expressed concerns about how people will receive help after White’s back-to-school backpack drive for this weekend was canceled.
“I believe he’s a good man,” said Crystal Dukes, who lives nearby. “He’s fair to the people.”
Some people like Dukes say they still believe in White.
“In my eyes, he’s innocent until proven guilty,” Dukes said.
“The Ward has to show unity, and we have to stand with the councilman at this time,” ANC Joseph Johnson said.
Right now, Ward 8 leaders want people to know that they’re here to help as much as possible.
“We have to continue to work and educate our community on things we can do better, just making sure residents still have access to those things,” Johnson said.
Commissioner Adofo says they’ll reach out to White’s office to see if there’s is anything they can step in and help. There will also be more meetings as things develop here. White is expected back in court on September 19.
