FORT WASHINGTON, Md. — The family of a man who was killed following a vigil at Wise High School is calling on the community to help police solve the case.
Hundreds gathered Friday morning at the Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington to pay their farewells to Shahid Omar Jr., 24, who was shot and killed on July 12.
Omar's family says he had attended the vigil for his three best friends who died in a fiery car crash. Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson and two of his former high school teammates – Isaiah Hazel and Anthony "AJ" Lytton Jr. – were killed in a crash when a speeding, possibly drunk driver crashed into the car they were travelling in.
Prince George’s County Police said the shooting happened 30 seconds after officers left the school, returning to find a young woman shot and Omar fighting for his life.
"The crime, the senseless crime is horrific, and the person that did this to my son, I don't know if you had a regard for life. I don't know if you were raised to have a regard for human life, but Omar did," Omar's mother Yvonne Clarke told WUSA9.
Investigators have never revealed a potential motive or description of the shooters, but said they did find a gun at the scene.
Yvonne and Travis Clarke called on the public to help serve justice in their son's homicide.
"I don't want my son's life to be in vain. Please, if you know something say something," Travis Clarke told WUSA9 following the funeral service.
During the ceremony, Omar's older sister Jasmine Blake offered an emotional message to the crowd. "All these people are calling in and saying what they believe happened, but no one wants to come forward. It's over a hundred of y'all in here. That is crazy. And then to keep calling him your friend. Step up," Blake said as the crowd applauded.
Omar leaves behind a young daughter and a son that is expected be be born in September.
