Kinder Haus Toys is an old-fashioned shop serving the DMV for over 40 years | Love Where You Live

The knowledgeable full-service staff is waiting to help you pick out the perfect item

ARLINGTON, Va. — We're introducing you to local entrepreneurs and bringing you some of the DMV's best shopping, just in time for the holidays, with our shop local series. Next, we're taking you inside Kinder Haus Toys in Arlington. It offers a wide selection of toys, arts and crafts, books clothing and more, with a knowledgeable, full-service staff waiting to help you pick out the perfect item.

Stepping into Kinder Haus is like taking a step back in time. Located in the Lyon Park section of Clarendon, there are old-fashioned touches everywhere. From the ornate tile floor — similar to what's in the U.S. Capitol — to the custom-made wooden posts and Victorian-inspired awning, Kinder Haus is designed to be just what the name translates to: The Children's House.

Sue Pyatt originally opened the toy shop when her kids were young, back in 1982. The original store was on Lee Highway in Arlington. Sue made the move to Clarendon in 2006 and never looked back. Sue and her family, including her husband Everett — who everyone calls Papa Bear —grew the business over the past 41 years with a focus on service, selection and style."

"People have been very supportive of us, we have good selection, quality things, and that's what they like," Everett said.

Sue even wrote a popular series of children's books that greet visitors as they walk in, including "Call Me Madame President," a uniquely D.C. tale of a spunky 8-year-old girl's quest for the White House.

These days, the community staple on North Fillmore Street has its on unofficial mascot, Mr. Panda Bubble Bear, and an array of high-quality toys, books and sporting goods.

"We believe in people coming in here and asking a personal question, 'What can I get a 2-year-old, a 3-year-old,' and Laura will take the person around the store and show you your choices," Everett said.

Laura Grossi is the manager, and a familiar face at Kinder Haus. She has worked with the Pyatts for 20 years. She still feels every day is a joy to come into work.

"I say it's like coming to Disneyland every day. It's just an experience," she said.

So whether you stop in for the latest doll, a baby book on physics, or a clothing item from their selection of premium children's clothes, chances are good you'll be able to find that perfect item at Kinder Haus.
