Sterling community comes together after deadly house explosion

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church invited firefighters and community members to join them in prayer Sunday night.

STERLING, Va. — Three firefighters are still in the hospital following a deadly house explosion in Sterling, Virginia on Friday. One firefighter has been released, and another has unfortunately died.

The volunteer firefighter who died on scene has been identified as Trevor Brown.

On Sunday, community members in Sterling came together to join a local church in prayer. Firefighters were invited alongside community members to join Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church for their regular mass.

"It's hard to imagine sometimes these tragedies are so local, when they're local it impacts the entire community but what is also near by is this faith community,” Diocese of Arlington Bishop Michael Burbidge said.

People gathered inside the church on Sunday to pray for everyone impacted by the home explosion in Sterling including the volunteer firefighter who died, 45-year-old Trevor Brown. Several people seen wearing Sterling rescue volunteer shirts and jackets, and struggling to hold back their emotions.

"Trevor Brown is like the many hero's and servants who every single day generously just offer themselves no matter the cost,” Burbidge said.

Meanwhile a mile-and-a-half-away from the church, crews were seen combing through evidence and trying to figure out how this all happened.

A small memorial with flowers people have dropped off is right near the scene.

You could also see neighbors helping neighbors with clean up and first responders with whatever they may need.

WUSA9 spoke with a woman who put chairs out with a message to firefighters — welcoming them to take a seat and break if they needed. She said the idea just came to her when she realized she had so many chairs around the house.

There were signs thanking fire crews and police and people calling them hero’s.

A neighbor shared the following heartfelt message with WUSA9;

“I’m very grateful for him but I’m very sorry for his wife and his three children,” a woman who lives nearby, Heidi Calles said. “I'm just sending prayers out to all of their families because I’m just no matter if a firefighter was hurt or not… they still, it’s traumatizing I’m sure. I just feel bad for them.”

The people attending service did not want to speak on camera just yet.

The community is still grieving the loss of one of their own.
