Sports complex damaged in Woodbridge fire asks for community support

The blaze has forced Kid's Choice Sport and Fun Center to close its doors indefinitely.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A Woodbridge sports complex damaged in a massive blaze last week is asking for the community's help to rebuild. Kid's Choice Sport and Fun Center started an online fundraiser with the goal of raising $30,000 for recovery.

Prince William County Fire and Rescue said the fire started around 4 p.m. at a home only 100 feet behind the center. High winds spread the fire quickly. Officials deemed both buildings a loss.

Now, those who operate the Kids Choice Sports Center, like general manager Linda Bradshaw, are trying to figure out what they can do next for the hundreds of kids they serve.

"I don't know what else there is but to keep these kids moving and happy," said Bradshaw.

She and her son were the only two people in the building when the fire started. She said she smelled smoke outside of her office and went to investigate.

"And the whole back of the building was on fire just in the middle," said Bradshaw. "So I'm just in shock at first, like what in the world."

She said that is when she called 911. After making sure her son was out of the building, all they could do was watch the place she had worked at for eight years go up in flames.

"You never think it's going to happen. You never think the building you're working in is going to go up that fast," said Bradshaw.

Organizers of the fundraiser say the money raised will be used to pay staff and also the family of four who lost their home in the fire.

"For years, Kids Choice Woodbridge has been more than just a place for children to learn and play; it has been a second home for many families. We are committed to getting back on our feet and reopening our doors as quickly as possible, but we cannot do it alone. Every donation, no matter the size, will directly impact our recovery," organizers wrote on the GoFundMe page.
