LEESBURG, Va. — In response to a troubling rise in Hyundai car theftS nationwide, the Leesburg Police Department has launched a new initiative to enhance security for local owners.
Beginning Monday, the department will be giving out free Hyundai steering wheel locks to residents to help prevent them from having their cars stolen.
The program comes in response to a nationwide rise in thefts of older key-ignition Hyundai cars, which have been singled out because of specific vulnerabilities. The steering wheel locks, provided by Hyundai Motor Company, provide an added layer of security for owners.
Anyone who lives in the area and owns a Hyundai car manufactured between 2016 and 2021 that does not have a key fob or push-button start can get a free steering wheel lock.
To be eligible for a steering wheel lock, you must reside in Loudoun County and submit a copy of your vehicle registration to the Leesburg Police Department. You can email the information to LPD-PIO@Leesburgva.gov. If you don't have access to a computer, you can visit the station for assistance, available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Registration is necessary as supplies are limited.
The Leesburg Police Department advises all car owners to take extra steps to protect their vehicles. These precautions include parking in well-lit areas, keeping valuables hidden, and always locking their car doors.
