Haymarket Police collects donations for families displaced by home explosion

People can bring items to the police department lobby anytime between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

HAYMARKET, Va. — Two Prince William County families lost their home and their belongings when it exploded after a gas leak last week. Now, local police are asking the community to help the families out.

Haymarket Police Department posted on Facebook asking people to donate some essential items the families need. People can bring items to the police department lobby anytime between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The police department is located at 15000 Washington Street #110. 

Here are the items the department is asking for:

  • Women’s clothing:
    Shirts: XL to 1X
    Leggings: XL
    Shoes: Size 8
    Bra Size: 2XL

  • Men’s Clothing:
    Shirts: XL or XXL
    Shoes: Men 10.5

  • Women’s/ men’s toiletries

  • Boy Toddler Clothing Size: (2 years old) 2T/24m
    Shirts, sweats, pajamas, jacket and shoes
    (Birthday is in November)

  • Girl Toddler Clothing Size: (4 years old) 3T/4T
    7/8 size shoes
    Underwear

  • Size 5 diapers

  • Wipes

  • Toys for both children

  • Round binky

The families told WUSA9 a contractor was repairing a water main break in the home when they hit a gas line. The families were evacuated and Washington Gas was called, but an hour later, the house exploded. Three pets were also lost in the explosion.

The police donation drop-off is in addition to a community-established donation drop at the Piedmont Club that has been collecting items for the two families since the explosion. The Piedmont Club is located at 14675 Piedmont Vista Drive.
