WASHINGTON — The community is coming together to help raise money for the family of a woman killed in a crash after being carjacked outside a hospital emergency room in Northwest, D.C.
Freda Warren is organizing the fundraiser on behalf of Leslie Marie Gaines.
Authorities say Gaines was waiting on her daughter to get her a wheelchair when the car she was in was stolen in front of Washington Hospital Center. The woman who took it, identified as Kayla Kenisha Brown, 22, got into the driver's seat and drove away with Gaines still inside. When Brown tried make a turn, she lost control of the car and crashed into a building. Brown got out of the car and tried to run away, but was taken into custody shortly after.
Gaines was injured in the crash and taken to an area hospital for treatment, where she later died from her injuries.
Kayla Brown, 22, is facing numerous charges for the June 3 theft and deadly crash. She is due in court Thursday afternoon for a mental observation hearing.
According to the GoFundMe, some charges have been dropped against Brown, which WUSA9 has not confirmed.
So far, a little less than a $1,000 has been raised for the Gaines family.
Anyone who would like to donate can do so here.
