Family starts fundraiser after mom seriously injured in DC apartment explosion

The money will go toward covering her medical costs.

WASHINGTON — In the wake of a devastating gas explosion in a Northwest D.C. apartment building, a GoFundMe has been started for Rosario Aguilar, a beloved mother who was severely injured in the blast.

On the morning of Sept. 20, a gas explosion rocked the four-story building on Columbia Road, leaving Rosario in the ICU. She sustained severe burns and faces a long and challenging road to recovery.

Her family, reeling from the tragedy, is determined to give Rosario all the support they can during this difficult time. However, the mounting medical bills and the uncertainty of future rehabilitation costs have led them to seek help from the community. Her family says the fundraiser will ease the financial burden on them, allowing Rosario to focus solely on healing without the added stress of overwhelming expenses.

On the day of the explosion, firefighters and hazardous materials teams responded to the apartments just after 9:30 a.m., evacuating the building and rescuing several pets. Fortunately, no other residents were physically injured, though the Red Cross was assisting over 50 families who were displaced, providing financial aid, emotional support, and recovery resources. Three units in the building were deemed unsafe to live in by the D.C. Department of Buildings, and the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Rosario, the only person injured, has become the heart of this tragedy, with her family expressing deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers. In their statement, the Aguilar family shared:

“We are heartbroken over this tragic event, but our primary concern is ensuring that Rosario has the strength and resources to continue her fight. Please consider donating and sharing this post to help us give our mom the support she needs to heal and move forward."

To support Rosario’s recovery, donations can be made through the family’s GoFundMe page. The Aguilar family thanks everyone for their kindness, prayers, and ongoing support, saying, “With love and gratitude, we are so grateful for this community that cares so deeply for her.”
