POTOMAC, Md. — In a heartfelt message shared with the Bullis School community, the Head of School, Christian Sullivan, announced the devastating news of the passing of Coach Ray Butler, a cherished member of the Bullis family for over a decade. Coach Butler died late Monday night.
Sullivan said, "Ray passed late last night, and his sudden departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt across our entire community, particularly among our football players, who knew him not just as a coach, but as a mentor and friend."
Ray Butler's journey at Bullis began on the security team, where Sullivan says his calm demeanor and compassionate nature quickly endeared him to everyone he encountered. It was evident from the start that Butler was more than just a member of the staff—he was a guiding light, a constant source of support, and a man who embodied kindness and patience in all his interactions.
Beyond his role in security, Ray's passion for football and his unwavering dedication to the growth and development of Bullis students led him to join the football coaching staff. In 2023, he stepped into the role of Head Varsity Football Coach.
Coach Butler's impact on the Bullis community is immeasurable, said Sullivan. He was known not just for the victories he helped secure on the football field, but for the countless lives he touched with his genuine care and steadfast dedication.
In this time of grief, the school said it is focused on supporting its students and faculty. Counselors are available to provide comfort and guidance to anyone in need.
Details regarding funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
