Worker killed when yard waste dumped on her at Shady Grove Transfer Station

A 35-year-old subcontractor was working to sort through the waste when a load was dumped on top of her in Derwood, Md.

DERWOOD, Md. — One person was killed and two others were injured Thursday afternoon after an accident at the Shady Grove Transfer Station. 

The incident happened in the 16100 block of Frederick Road.

Police said 35-year-old Gladis Loren Melendrez-Fuentes of Rockville died in the incident. She was a subcontractor at the trash transfer station, who sorted through yard waste and removed any garbage mixed in. 

While she was separating trash from yard waste Thursday afternoon, a load of yard waste was dumped on top of her.

Police said two other people were hurt in the incident.
