WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Monday night, a family was displaced from their home and lost two of their dogs after a fire in Woodbridge.
A spokesperson for the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Firefighters says the fire occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. in the 14200 block of Chesterfield Drive. Firefighters who first responded to the house saw flames coming through the front door, which had been left open when the residents left the house.
The fire spread quickly from the kitchen to the entire first floor, says the spokesperson. Firefighters had the fire under control within 20 minutes.
We're told that no one was injured, but two dogs died in the fire.
Five people were displaced as a result of the fire and are being held by the American Red Cross, says the spokesperson.
Food left on the stove was the cause of the fire, according to the Prince William County Fire Marshal's office.
The OWL VFD spokesperson says that the fire also an example of why it's important to close the door after evacuating your house during a fire: leaving doors open allows more air to feed the fire.
