WASHINGTON — A 3-month-old baby died Tuesday after being found unconscious in Southeast, D.C. over the weekend.
Officials said the cause of death was due to blunt force injuries and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
"I'm very upset," said neighbor Diane Jefferies, her voice breaking. "Three months old, they couldn't take care of themselves."
Around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to the 4300 block of G Street in Southeast for the report of an unconscious infant.
When police arrived to the scene, they tried performing life saving measures on the infant, Skylar Newman, inside of the residence.
She was transported to the hospital in grave condition. On Tuesday, police said Newman succumbed her injuries was pronounced dead.
Cornell Holton, who lived at the house, told officers he found Skylar unconscious and not breathing, according to a police report. Investigators have yet to charge anyone with a crime, but the report lists murder and first degree cruelty to children as the offenses.
Skylar was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy was performed.
The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information, which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
