WASHINGTON (WUSA9) – The DDOT announced that all lanes on the 16th Street Bridge, located over Military Road NW, will reopen two weeks ahead of schedule just in time for the big Fourth of July holiday weekend. Scheduling full closures of the Bridge this weekend for critical deck work made the early opening possible.
The Director of DDOT, Leif Dormsjo, stated, "Our plan had been to fully reopen the 16th Street bridge on July 15, but now we'll be able to do that on July 1."
Full closures of the 16th Street bridge will begin this weekend with the first full closure starting at 10 p.m. on Friday and ending at 10 p.m. Saturday and the second full closure starting at 5 p.m. Sunday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday.
"One of the main thoroughfares into the Nation's Capital will now be fully open to traffic for the Fourth of July holiday weekend," explained Director Dormsjo.
The DDOT is working with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to help commuters with alternate routes during construction period. Commuters can also visit WMATA's website for service changes at http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/metro_service_status/advisories.cfm?AID=4850.
Street delays can be anticipated along 16th Street, 14th Street, Military Road and the adjacent areas during construction. Local commuters can prepare for these expected delays through July 1 by knowing about the following detours:
• For northbound traffic on 16th Street: Turn right onto Missouri Avenue eastbound, take the ramp onto 14th Street northbound; turn left on Aspen Street westbound; and turn right back onto 16th Street northbound.
• For southbound traffic on 16th Street: Turn left onto Fort Stevens Drive eastbound; turn right onto 14th Street southbound; turn left onto Colorado Avenue westbound; and turn left back onto 16th Street southbound.
