FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — On Tuesday, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted 9-to-1 to approve adjustments made to the 2025 budget.
The approved budget would increase taxes for Fairfax County residents by nearly six percent. This includes a three percent increase in the real estate tax rate, which will directly affect homeowners. A 2.9-percent increase in property taxes was also approved in the adjustments.
In Virginia, property taxes include personal vehicles and boats, unlike its neighboring state, Maryland. According to a release from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, this will add $450 to the taxes Fairfax County residents already pay.
The approved budget also includes eliminating Animal Protection Police Officers from moving forward.
Supervisor Pat Herrity, representing Springfield, was the only one opposed to the change and he had this to say about the new budget:
“More people are leaving the county than coming to the county and high taxes and fees are a big part of our affordability problem. Not only are our residents paying more in taxes and fees on everything from athletics to building permits, but they are getting less in services.”
The new amended budget will go into effect beginning Tuesday, May 7.
