As minimum wage increases on July 1 in DC, tipped workers to make at least $10 an hour

Tipped workers will get a $2 base pay bump as part of the increase.

WASHINGTON — Minimum wage workers in the District will see a pay bump starting July 1, including tipped workers.

According to the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES), minimum wage will increase from $17 per hour to $17.50 per hour.

Tipped workers will see a much larger pay bump as their base minimum wage will increase from $8 an hour to $10 per hour. However, if an employee's hourly tip earnings added to that base pay do not equal the District's full minimum wage, the employer is required to pay the difference.

This is the fourth time minimum wage has been increased in the District since 2020. For more information, visit the DOES website

In 2023, tipped workers' base minimum wage increased from $6 to $8. However, with the increase, also came a rise in restaurant surcharges. In the six months before Initiative 82 passed, the DC Attorney General’s Office told WUSA9 it received three complaints about restaurant charges. In the six months after it passed, 152 complaints were filed.
