WASHINGTON — Some shoppers are confused and hundreds of people are out of a job after Foxtrot Market abruptly closed all its locations nationwide on Tuesday.
This decision comes just six months after Foxtrot and Dom's Kitchen & Market, a pair of upscale grocery stores and high-end convenience store chains, announced a merger under the new entity of Outfox Hospitality.
Corporate workers were told Tuesday morning via a conference call with management that all stores would be closing by noon.
The closure affects two Dom's stores and 33 Foxtrots across Chicago, Austin, Dallas and the D.C. area.
On Tuesday, several District customers showed up outside Foxtrot's 14th Street location in hopes of scoring some free wine and food. These folks were ushered out of the store.
The company released a statement to say, "It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you of a difficult decision we have had to make. After much consideration and evaluation, we regret to announce that Foxtrot and Dom’s Kitchen & Market will be closing their doors starting on April 23, 2024." Adding that, "This decision has not been made lightly, and we understand the impact it will have on you, our loyal customers, as well as our dedicated team members."
In response to the sudden closure, a spike in people searching the WARN Act has been noticed on Google Trends, which is the law that requires 60 days' notice of layoffs.
