Play with pride: where to find LGBTQ+ sports groups

Run, jump or kick it with DC-area groups promoting inclusion in sports.

WASHINGTON — Whether you're an amateur athlete just looking to get moving or a serious sports star, groups across DC are hitting the field, court or street to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Check out some of the events and groups you can get involved with:

Stonewall Sports:

Stonewall Sports was founded in 2010 with an emphasis on inclusion and philanthropy. The nonprofit believes that organized communities have the ability and responsibility to support others in need, according to its website.

“As someone who knows firsthand what it’s like to be ostracized for living authentically, I can’t exaggerate how important it is to have safe queer spaces to call home. For me, that’s my sapphic kickball team, The Roommates,” said Mishka Espey, Stonewall Kickball DC (SKDC) player. “Our spring season may be over, but that isn’t stopping us from making so many plans together for pride month!”

SKDC is among five sports offered in Washington. Others include billiards, bocce, climbing and dodgeball.

Team DC:

Team DC is a nonprofit focused on educating the LGBTQ+ community about opportunities in sports. Whether it’s connecting players with leagues, offering scholarships to student-athletes or fighting discrimination, Team DC is intertwined in the local LGBTQ+ sports scene. Visit its website for community resources, events and ways to get involved.

DC Pynk:

DC Pynk meets every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the DuPont Circle fountain. It’s a running club for lesbians, queer women, trans and nonbinary people that focuses more on community than speed. Whether you’re looking for a casual stroll or a three-to-five-mile run, DC Pynk welcomes all abilities. The group’s Strava page says, “while we do not center straight people or cisgender men, allies are welcome when invited by members of our community.”

For strictly sports spectators, DC’s professional teams are also gearing up for Pride. Here’s the game plan:

  • The Washington Nationals Night OUT is on June 6 at 6:45 p.m. Special ticket holders will get a wearable flag giveaway item, and a portion of the ticket sales will go to Team DC.
  • The Mystics Pride game is on June 22 at 3 p.m. at Entertainment and Sports Arena against the Dallas Wings. According to its website, this is the Mystics’ most popular theme night. Exclusive Pride jerseys are already sold out.
  • The Washington Spirit’s Pride Night at Audi Field is on June 29 against the North Carolina Courage. Tickets start at $14.
  • DC United’s Night OUT is on Aug. 24 against FC Dallas.
