WASHINGTON — At least 12 animals have hope for a better future after being removed from an unfit home in Southwest, D.C.

The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) has stepped in to rescue 12 animals from unsafe and unsanitary conditions. This distressing case came to light following a call from a concerned person who reported seeing dogs in poor conditions at a home nearby.

On Wednesday, HRA’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) officers executed a search and seizure warrant at the home, uncovering a heart-wrenching scene. They found six dogs and three puppies chained outside, many lacking adequate shelter. The animals were living in deplorable conditions, surrounded by feces, and exhibited signs of severe neglect. Most of the dogs had visible sores and wounds, with some appearing alarmingly underweight, their ribs and spines prominently visible. All the dogs were infested with fleas, indicating a lack of basic care and hygiene.

The rescued dogs are now receiving the necessary medical attention and care from HRA. A veterinarian will conduct thorough examinations to assess their health and provide any required treatments. One of the puppies has already received critical care for anemia linked to a hookworm infestation.

In addition to the dogs, officers also discovered three turtles in a tank without access to a dry landing area. These reptiles are now under the protection and care of HRA, ensuring they receive the proper environment and treatment.

"Situations like these are incredibly sad and can be very difficult for even the most seasoned humane law enforcement officers," said Kate Meghji, Chief Operating Officer of HRA. "We are incredibly proud of this team who goes above and beyond to protect animals each and every day."

As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding this case continues, HRA faces an urgent challenge. Their shelters are currently over capacity, highlighting the critical need for community involvement in animal rescue efforts. HRA is actively calling for adopters and fosters to help alleviate the strain on their resources.
