Washington Wizards host Black History Month assembly at DC high school

In 1791, Banneker joined Andrew Ellicott and a team of surveyors to place 40 stone markers to line the original boundary of Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Wizards are celebrating Black History Month with "Not Bound by One Month," which is the team recognizing and celebrating achievements, influence, and talents of people and organizations from the DMV.

Included in the celebration, the team will highlight the lasting impact of Benjamin Banneker has had on the area. On Monday, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, located in Northwest D.C., will host an assembly for students to learn, celebrate and honor his legacy.

The event will take place from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., and will feature Rachel Jamison Webster, a collateral descendant of Banneker through his sister, Jemima, and author of “Benjamin Banneker and Us: Eleven Generations of an American Family.”

The book, which was released in 2023, tells the story of Banneker, a scientist, mathematician, astronomer, and writer, by researching 11 generations of family history.

In 1791, Banneker joined Andrew Ellicott and a team of surveyors to place 40 stone markers to line the original boundary of Washington, D.C.

In addition to Webster, Edie Lee Harris and Robert Lett, Banneker’s collateral descendants, will be at the event.
