WUSA9 celebrating 75 years of bringing the news to the DMV | Get Uplifted

Derek McGinty and Maureen Bunyan shared some memories from their many years at WUSA9 on-air Tuesday night.

WASHINGTON — Not just today, but all year long WUSA9 is getting uplifted by a high milestone.

It's our 75th anniversary and we are telling the story of our station as well as our people here at channel 9. On Tuesday night, on the evening news, if you watched you might have spotted two very familiar faces who reunited with the team to celebrate.

Derek McGinty and Maureen Bunyan shared some memories from their many years at WUSA9.

Bunyan was a lead anchor here starting in the 1970s. She reminded us it was a time of transformation as television stations like ours hired more people of color and women.

"With the influx of minorities in women, there became a change in the way stories were told because many of us brought in a different way of looking at the community. Also we had contacts within the community and relationships in the community that helped us to understand what was happening to people of color and to women," Bunyan said.

WUSA9's Allison Seymour said that personal connection to the community touched her at a very young age and made her want to break into the business. She even tried to model her style after the iconic Bunyan in her early years on-air.

"She is who I wanted to be as a young woman in the business," Seymour said. "So thank you DMV for welcoming us into your homes for 75 years!"
