D.C. woman celebrates 100th birthday in former childhood home | Get Uplifted

The staff at her senior living facility surprised her with a visit to the home she's so fond of.

WASHINGTON — We are getting uplifted and nostalgic with the help of a long-time District resident.

Winona Flyzik was given a unique way to celebrate a major milestone in her life, the opportunity to return to her beloved roots: she celebrated her 100th birthday at the very place she called home while growing up.

Thanks to the management at her senior facility and the current homeowners, Flyzik got the chance to walk the hallways of her youth in the home her father bought when it was brand new in 1930.

These days, she lives in the Heatherwood Senior Living Community in northern Virginia, but she regularly shares her fond memories and stories with staff and her friends about her childhood home in D.C.

That gave the staff at Heatherwood the idea to surprise Flyzik by taking her back.

They arranged the visit for her 100th birthday. To their delight, the current homeowners said yes. In fact, Beth Alalben and Matt Chambers, who have lived there since the late 1980s, had just been doing some research on the history of the home to find out about the previous owners

In the end, the former and current homeowner shared pictures of the house throughout their experiences in it. Two worlds colliding, with endless memories in the same home.

This full circle moment that no doubt was a treat, not only for Flyzik, but Alalben and Chambers as well.
