HERNDON, Va. — School is almost out for the summer, which should be a time for kids to just be kids, to have fun and play all day. But that is hard to do when you are hungry. Sadly, that's the reality for many children in the DMV who rely on school food programs to get enough to eat.
But thanks to Weekend Food For Kids, a program run by Assistance League of Northern Virginia, a monthly food-packing event has helped to fill the gap since 2010.
The program has ensured that hundreds of school-aged children at Title I schools in Alexandria, Fairfax and Prince William counties have received supplemental food over the weekend when school meals are unavailable.
The last food-packing and distribution event took place Sunday at the Dominion Energy Facility in Herndon, Virginia. The utility company has been a partner with the Assistance League for 12 years. Volunteers packaged 1,730 bags of shelf-stable nutritious food for kids who need it. Dominion Energy volunteers drove the bags to six Title I schools in the area.
