MARYLAND, USA — Today is the 26th day of Women's History Month, and this story is getting us uplifted.
Major General Janeen Birckhead is the 31st adjutant general for Maryland. She is the only African American woman leading a state military and only the second woman to do so in the history of the state.
In her role, she oversees more than 6,300 soldiers, airman, federal and state civilian workers. It was under her command that 15,000 national guardsmen were deployed following the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
Born on Maryland's eastern shore, Birckhead was recently named one of USA Today's 'Women of the Year' honoree for Maryland because of her significant contribution to the community and to our nation.
She was also responsible for leading the Vaccine Equity Task Force that aimed to ensure the equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
WUSA9's Allison Seymour also added that she is, "proud to say that Major General Birckhead is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta and a graduate of Hampton University."
