Liver donor, recipient run NYC Marathon together | Get Uplifted

The 50th running of the New York City Marathon included a field of 33,000 people. But two runners had an extra special bond.

NEW YORK — Sunday was the 50th running of the New York City Marathon. The field had approximately 33,000 people, all brought together by their love of running. But two runners had an extra special bond.

Sarah Kate Gillingham and Dave Kane are friends, but they share more than a friendship -- they also share a liver.

More than four years ago, Dave learned he had liver cancer. He needed a transplant and his friend Sarah Kate stepped up. She donated 60% of her liver to her friend. More than four years after the surgery, they ran the New York City Marathon together.

They raised money for the American Liver Foundation, and they wanted to raise awareness about organ donation.
