WASHINGTON — In the DMV this week, weather has been a big talker with snow blanketing the area, but there has been more than just the heat that is keeping our hearts warm.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day started off our Monday as well, a day known for acts of service in the community -- and that is getting us uplifted. Many people braced the cold for the day of service events, and one in D.C. saw big numbers.
This year, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser put out the call for groups to collect blankets and toiletries to make sure that all of our neighbors have what they need to navigate these cold winter days.
The Greater Washington Urban League Young Professionals-Thursday Network answered that call with their 24th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Blanket & Toiletry Drive. The event was hosted in collaboration with Ron Brown College Preparatory High School to assemble and deliver care packages, according to the Eventbrite page for the event.
Once the day came to a close, the Urban League, and other groups in attendance, created 1,500 toiletry kits, collected 1,300 blankets, made almost 650 sandwiches and assemble 170 items of warm winter clothes. In all, they were able to help out nine local shelters.
The snow may have cancelled school for most kids in the DMV for a few days, but the spirit of service weathered the storm.
