Maine boy battling brain cancer gets special welcome back to school

The local fire department picked him up in a fire truck, giving him a special ride back to school for the first time in two months.

HAMPDEN, Maine — An 8-year-old boy's resilience is helping to get us uplifted.

Colby Annis returned to elementary school in Maine for the first time Monday after being diagnosed with a very advanced and aggressive form of brain cancer. And he made his return to school in style.

The local fire department picked him up in a fire truck, giving him a special ride back to school for the first time in two months.

"Hey what do you think? Do you think it's time to get loud? Alright let's do it. There we are," Lt. Chris Leopold with the Hampden Fire Department said as he gave Annis a ride in the fire truck. "Any time that we can get in the fire trucks and drive with the red lights, we're big kids at heart so this is enjoyable for us as well."

All of his classmates lined up in front of the school, some even made signs to welcome him back.

School officials say he would often FaceTime with his class while undergoing treatment and his main goal was always to come back to school which is exactly what he did.
