Students at Howard University help others through Alternative Spring Break | Get Uplifted

This year's theme is "A Legacy of Paying it Forward."

WASHINGTON — A long-standing tradition of service at 'The Mecca' -- Howard University is something to truly get uplifted about.

It's spring break season, a time when many college students head to resort destinations for fun and relaxation, but for three decades groups of Howard University students have instead used this time to serve others through a student-led program called Alternative Spring Break. The program is funded solely by donations.

Once on the ground, hundreds of students help local organizations by volunteering, engaging in clean up efforts, mentoring, or giving out food among other duties.

This year marks 30 years of the alternative spring break program at the university and a record 2,100 students applied to serve. Right now, 1,400 spring breakers are on a mission to serve 25 underserved communities domestically and internationally.

This year's theme is "A Legacy of Paying it Forward."
