ARLINGTON, Va. — Local Memorial Day events honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country is getting us uplifted.
On Sunday, at the Arlington National Cemetery, thousands of people came out to pay their respects. For the third time ever, guests could leave flowers at the foot of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Volunteers spent all day Saturday preparing those flowers for guests.
Also, on Saturday, volunteers helped place flags on soldiers' graves at Alexandria National Cemetery. Sheryl Sims sent WUSA9 pictures as hundreds of people helped out in the annual event.
And some of those volunteers got quite the surprise. Former President Barack Obama showed up at the cemetery for the event. The former president paid his respects to the fallen soldiers and gave a brief speech to everyone there.
