WASHINGTON — A talented young artist from D.C. is among the top five finalists for the 2024 Doodle for Google contest, and that is worth celebrating.
Maisie Derlega is a senior at Jackson-Reed High School in Northwest D.C. She was one of thousands from 55 states and regions who submitted their ideas for Google's 16th annual contest.
In January, the search engine giant asked students to submit their doodles and answer the prompt "My wish for the next 25 years."
In response to the prompt, Derlega's submitted her work called "Family Dinner." Her statement in response to the prompt is: "Every Sunday night is filled with chaos, laughter, and the smell of food in my household. The standing invitation goes to any friends and family in the area. As my life grows and changes, my wish for the next 25 years is that this tradition remains a constant."
If Derlega wins, her design will be displayed on Google's homepage for a day for hundreds of millions to see, and she will receive a $55,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for her school or nonprofit. The winner will be announced later this month.
