DMV children celebrate reading at Black Children's Book Fest | Get Uplifted

More than 340 tickets were given for the free event in Northwest D.C.

WASHINGTON — It's International Children's Book Day, and to celebrate, we are highlighting diversity and inclusion in children's literature.

The weekend marked the second year of the Black Children's Book Fest. More than 340 tickets were given for the free event at the Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage in Northwest D.C.

The afternoon featured a book fair with more than 25 authors from the DMV and beyond. The hundreds of books available tackled subjects from history, physical and mental health to positive affirmations, and just old-fashioned make believe.

There were also plenty of children's activities including story-time and a comic book workshop.

WUSA9's Allison Seymour can even be spotted in an Instagram video of the event, looking truly uplifted at children being interested in reading especially with books that have illustrations that look like them.
