Over 200 bikes gifted to DC students | Get Uplifted

The second-grade students have been a part of the DCPS Biking in the Park program, which teaches the students how to ride a bike, bike safety, and more.
Kids in D.C.'s Wards 7 and 8 just spent weeks learning how to safely ride a bike.

WASHINGTON — Do you remember learning how to ride a bike? The fear of pedaling off on your own and you fostering new confidence when you finally keep yourself upright.

Well, 201 2nd graders have now experienced that feeling thanks to the D.C. community. Kids in Wards 7 and 8 just spent weeks learning how to safely ride a bike as part of a program at school.

To celebrate their hard work all of those students received their own bike, a bike lock, and helmet. Mayor Muriel Bower encouraged them to show off their new skills.

Over two hundred free bikes don't appear out of thin air -- a public-private partnership made this happen. A shoutout to all the groups who put the kids first to make the event a success.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the DCPS Health and Physical Education department’s ‘Biking in the Park’ program, an innovative, nation-leading model that equips second-graders with a life skill that fosters joy, fitness, safety, freedom and environmental stewardship," said Parsa Nazari, DC Bike Ride, Event Coordinator. "It’s thanks to our annual DC Bike Ride’s sponsors and participants that we’re able to pedal this program even further by giving these 200+ accomplished young people their first brand new bicycle.”
