WASHINGTON — At Z-Burger, the stakes were as high as the stacks of juicy patties, as competitive eaters gathered for a feast that promised not just flavor, but glory.

The 15th Annual Independence Day Burger Eating Championship at the restaurant's Tenleytown location got underway around noon on July 3.

Twelve contestants from around the U.S. and Canada competed to see who could eat the most burgers in 10 minutes. And this year's competition ended in a tie.

Molly Schuyler and Dan Kennedy both ate 34 burgers each in the allotted time. When asked how it felt to be co-champions, Kennedy said "I'm just happy to live in a country that allows us to do this USA baby!" Schuyler laughed and said "I gotta go to work at 3 p.m."

  • 2nd: $1,250
  • 3rd: $1,000
  • 4th: $750
  • 5th: $500
  • 6th:$400
  • 7th:$100

Following the contest, all spectators were treated to a free burger.

Z-Burger is described as a fast-casual restaurant known for its burgers, fries, onion rings, and 75 milkshake flavors. Z-Burger operates 16 locations in the DMV.
