WASHINGTON — Giant pandas are making their way back to D.C. However, if you were hoping to catch a peek at Bao Li and Qing Bao on their first day in the U.S. you may want to rethink those plans.
The China Wildlife Conservation Association confirmed Monday that the two 3-year-old giant pandas were D.C. bound. Their arrival comes nearly one year after resident giant pandas returned to China after 50 years in the District.
The animals are traveling in a plane dubbed the "Panda Express" by sponsor FedEx. It will make one stop in Alaska before landing in Virginia sometime Tuesday.
While the pandas may arrive this week, don't expect the exhibit to open soon. The National Zoo said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the zoological park will be closed to the public on Tuesday. Additionally, the zoo will not be disclosing any more timing regarding the pandas' arrival "for the safety of the pandas and the staff."
Additionally, the pandas will be required to quarantine in D.C. for nearly a month after arrival.
According to the China Wildlife Conservation Association, the National Zoo has renovated the home for the giant pandas and has established a supply of bamboo for the pandas to eat. In September, David M. Rubenstein, co-founder and co-chairman of The Carlyle Group, pledged $10 million toward the Smithsonian's $25 million campaign to fund the conservation program.
