WASHINGTON — A wallaby joey made a special appearance by peeping its head out of his mother's pouch for the first time since it was born at the National Zoo several months ago.
The zoo confirmed the birth announcement on Wednesday by tweeting out a video stating "It's a joey!"
Zoo keepers said they had observed the newborn joey kicking in its mother's pouch for several weeks before the pup decided to poke its head out on March 11.
The is the first time a Bennett wallaby has been born at the zoo since 1989, the zoo said.
The joey will not be fully examined until it's older, but the zoo confirms that both mother and baby are doing well.
Welcome to the world, little joey!
