PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — It was a feathered turn of events on MLK Jr. Highway Monday morning when a team of Prince George’s County Police officers swooped in to save the day. A patrol squad from Division III spotted a hawk in distress, clearly in need of some TLC.

Without missing a beat, the officers called in for backup to ensure their feathered friend would get the help it needed. After safely scooping up the hawk, they whisked it away to Frisky’s Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary in Howard County — a rehab center that specializes in caring for injured animals. Frisky’s will provide treatment and, hopefully soon, this bird will be soaring through the skies again.

With a little help from their friends in blue, this hawk is on its way to a full recovery. Here’s to a flap-tastic recovery.

And if you ever find an injured animal along your drive, here's what to do:

  • Stay safe: Pull over to a safe location away from traffic before attempting to help.
  • Do not touch: Injured wildlife can be dangerous or stressed; avoid direct contact to prevent harm to you and the animal.
  • Call for help: Contact local animal control, wildlife rescue, or a non-emergency police line for assistance.
  • Keep a safe distance: Observe the animal from a safe distance and avoid chasing or cornering it.
  • Provide location information: Share specific details about the location to help rescuers find the animal quickly.
  • Use a box or towel (if safe): If trained and it's safe to do so, gently cover small animals with a towel or place them in a box to keep them calm while waiting for help.
