'She was bleeding profusely' | Husband of coyote attack victim describes wife's encounter

The same coyote, that tested positive for rabies, attacked a second woman within a few hours in Burtonsville.

ASHTON, Maryland — Montgomery County Police say two women were attacked by the same coyote within hours Thursday.

The first attack happened at 9:15 a.m. in the 1400 block of Patuxent Drive in Ashton. That's where John Pescatore's wife was walking a neighbor’s dog when the coyote attacked her from the back.

“She felt a pain in the back of her leg," Pescatore said. "She turned around and it was a thing attached to her leg -- that thing was the coyote. It knocked her down, and it started attacking the dog. The dog broke away and then the coyote chased the dog.”

Pescatore said his wife was able to walk herself home, about a quarter of a mile. When he opened the door, he said his wife was already on the phone with police.

"When I got down here, she was bleeding profusely," he said. "Luckily, the ambulance and animal control were already here."

Hours later, the same coyote attacked another woman in the 3600 block of Bell Road in Burtonsville. Police said the woman fought the animal off by stabbing it.

After hours of searching, officials found the coyote near Dustin road, where it was shot and killed. Police later confirmed the animal tested positive for rabies.

Pescatore told WUSA9 his wife is doing okay. She’s at home recovering and has had a series of rabies shots.

“I had to go back to the site because her shoes came off and, now you feel different," Pescatore said. "Now, with our grandchildren, it has certainly caused a lot of people in our neighborhood to think twice.”
