WASHINGTON — The National Zoo is bidding a heartfelt farewell to one of its most cherished residents. On Nov. 1, the zoo says Kamala, a beloved female Asian elephant whose spirit and charm touched the hearts of many, passed. After a long battle with osteoarthritis, Kamala was humanely euthanized.
Kamala was so much more than just an elephant; she was a true ambassador for her species. Born in the wild and orphaned at a young age, she eventually found her way to the Calgary Zoo, where she became a proud mother to two calves, Calvin and Maharani. Calvin went on to father over a dozen Asian elephants worldwide, including Kandula, who was born here in D.C. in 2001 through artificial insemination. Each of Kamala’s descendants stands as a testament to her vital role in the conservation of Asian elephants, a species facing increasing threats in the wild.
At approximately 50 years old, Kamala was the wise matriarch of her herd, known for her playful and inquisitive nature. Visitors were often treated to the delightful sounds of her rumblings and squeaks, expressions of joy whenever her beloved caretakers approached. Her infectious spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her, creating memories that will linger long after her departure.
As we mourn the loss of this gentle giant, it’s hard not to draw parallels to the world beyond the zoo’s gates. With the presidential election fast approaching, Kamala's story feels especially poignant. While the election season is filled with noise and chaos, Kamala represented a different kind of power — a quiet strength and grace that reminded us all of the importance of nurturing our bonds, whether they be with our fellow humans or the animals we cherish.
National Zoo employees tried to ease Kamala's discomfort throughout her life, employing different techniques to manage her arthritis. However, in recent weeks, it became clear that her pain had progressed beyond their ability to provide relief. The decision to euthanize her was made with a heavy heart.
Kamala’s passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of her keepers and the community, but her legacy will continue to inspire the lives she touched and the conservation efforts she championed. As we say goodbye to this magnificent creature, let us also celebrate the joy she brought to our lives and remember the vital work that remains in protecting her species.
