LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — Adopt one rabbit, and get a second one free! That is the deal the Loudoun County Animals Services is offering after taking in more than 40 rabbits at once.
On Friday, April 5, LCAS said they received 43 rabbits, ranging from two days to two years old.
The rabbits come from a home where LCAS says their owner acquired three rabbits as pets. It didn't take long for that number to increase as the rabbits began reproducing.
“Rabbits really can multiply incredibly quickly, and they start reproducing at just four months of age. In addition to significant health and behavioral benefits, this really demonstrates why spay and neuter of all pets, including rabbits, is so important,” says Animal Shelter Operations Manager Melissa Heard.
With the record number of rabbits brought in at once, LCAS says they are in need of adoptive homes. All of the rabbits are in the process of being spayed and neutered and will soon be available for adoption.
Rabbits need specific love and care so LCAS will be hosting a free Rabbits 101 course for potential owners on Thursday, April 18 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those who attend will learn about all the care rabbits require and receive a voucher to adopt a rabbit free of charge.
For those who don't attend the course, rabbits will be available for adoption temporarily for $25 with an "adopt one, receive a second free" special. Available rabbits can be seen online at loudoun.gov/animals. Those interested in adopting should visit the Animal Shelter during adoption hours, which are daily between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
If you wish to help but cannot adopt, the LCAS shelter updated its wish list to reflect the current needs after the influx of rabbits.
