'Takes flight once again!' | Bald eagle released into wild after treatment in Northern Virginia

The eagle received six weeks of treatment and recovery.

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. — After more than a month of recovery, a bald eagle that was found injured in Northern Virginia has been released back into the wild.

Fairfax County's Animal Protection Police (APP) responded to Fairfax Station on Dec. 23 after receiving a report of an injured bald eagle. The adult male eagle was underweight and had suffered injuries to the head and a deep laceration on a leg.

An APP officer was able to safely capture the eagle and work with the police department's wildlife rehabilitator partners to get it the help needed. The eagle was taken by the Wildlife Rescue League (WRL) to Dr. Belinda Burwell at Wildlife Veterinary Care for medical assistance.

After six weeks of treatment and recovery, the eagle was successfully released by Dr. Burwell at Burke Lake Park on Sunday with APP, WRL, and park staff in attendance to celebrate its release.

"Our Fairfax County Park Authority’s work to restore and conserve habitat is also crucial for supporting our native wildlife," the police department stated in a news release. "We are grateful for these valued partnerships to provide life-saving outcomes for our local wildlife!"

APP may be reached through the police non-emergency phone number at (703) 691-2131.
