Maryland Voter Guide: Primary April 26

Poll hours on April 26 are 7am through 8pm.

WASHINGTON (WUSA*9)-- On Tuesday, April 26 Marylanders go to the polls to nominate their party's candidate for U.S. President, U.S. Senate and all the U.S. congressional seats. They will also elect delegates to the political conventions as well as candidates for local races, including school boards.

MORE: Voter Registration Information

Voters will notice a change when casting their ballots on primary day. They will vote using a paper ballot. This paper ballot will then be scanned by a machine. Once the scanner has counted your votes, the paper ballot automatically drops into a locked ballot box, says the Maryland State Board of Elections website.

Earlier this year election officials did away with the use of touch screen machines for early voting and on primary day. This change was made because some primary contests have long lists of names on the ballot that don't fit on just one screen. Some candidates running for office, said being put on a second or third screen put them at a disadvantage. For example, in the U.S. Senate race there are 10 people running for the democratic nomination and 14 people running for the republican nomination. The touch screen machines can show up to 7 candidates per page.

If voters make a mistake while marking their paper ballots, the Maryland State Board of Elections website says, "let an election judge know right away. In most cases, the election judge will void or cancel the ballot and give you another ballot."

If you are a voter with a disability that prevents you from using a paper ballot, you can have someone help you vote or you can use an electronic means to cast your ballot.
