ORANGE COUNTY, Va. — Family and friends are praying for a miracle for Omari Grey.
They call him "Superman," as the father of nine, a calculus teacher in D.C., a youth scout leader, a fitness guru and a Muslim homesteader in rural Virginia.
Friends said he's on life support after a head-on car crash early Wednesday morning, just minutes from his home in Orange County.
"This is the story of a black family of 11 that is homeschooling, homesteading, and homebuilding while facing obstacles at every stage," Omari Grey said while telling his own story in a video on his YouTube channel.
Grey grew up in D.C., traveled the world, was named an ultimate Men's Health Guy by the magazine and then settled his big family on a homestead that was deeded as reparations for his ancestors' enslavement.
"And then you've got nine spirited children, each with their own skills, and then me, a math teacher and fitness expert that's not afraid to fail forward," Grey says in the video.
Grey was driving his farm delivery vehicle home from D.C. when Virginia State Police say the Chevy Suburban drifted into the oncoming lane, and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer.
Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer was unhurt, but Grey was critically injured and flown to a Richmond hospital, where friends said he was just taken off life support, but is still struggling to survive.
"This is the most difficult time for Brother Omari and sister Sakinah," Rizwan Jaka, chair of the ADAMS Center mosque in Loudoun County, said. "And the relief comes when you have all the love and prayers. And that's all we can do at this moment."
Grey is a devout Muslim, but he moved his family to a part of rural Virginia where he said some people have been less than tolerant.
Now, many different communities have rallied to support the family in their time of need. In less than two days, people have contributed more than $820,000 on the LaunchGood site.
"God reminds us to respond to bad with good," Jaka said. "And brother Omari lived up to that: Responding to bad with good."
The friends who called him "Superman" are praying Grey proves he's invincible.
