Homegrown talent to shine when Alvin Ailey takes stage at Kennedy Center

Alvin Ailey dancer, Alisha Rena Peek, enjoys performing around the world but admits performances in the Washington DC metro are extra special.

WASHINGTON — The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre will grace the stage of the Kennedy Center from February 6th through February 11.

Their arrival marks the return of several homegrown dancers who will take the stage with the company including Alisha Rena Peek.

"I've trained in this place. I've grown in this place and [look forward] to being able to share my gift," said Peek when she spoke with WUSA 9's Larry Miller about her upcoming performance.

Peek joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 2022.  From Upper Marlboro, Maryland, she began her formal dance training at the Washington School of Ballet and continued studying at a number of other prestigious ballet schools including The Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Kirov Ballet Academy.

Alvin Ailey's run at the Kennedy Center is expected to introduce audiences to new works like Century and Me, Myself and You.  And every show is expected to conclude with a performance of Revelations, a signature work for the company.

"To perform these new works is still incredible to me," said Peek enthusiastically. "We've performed these works in our City Center tour but its nice to perform in front of family because it's new to them."

In addition to a rigorous performance schedule, Peek will take time to work with local DMV dance students, providing them of the possibilities with a professional career in dance.

"I hope audiences feel inspired," said Peek. "...the audience will get to see how versatile we are."
