Iconic Martin's Tavern turns 90

Martin's marked nine decades in the business with a party, of course.

WASHINGTON — The iconic Martin's Tavern in Georgetown just turned 90! The tavern celebrated its anniversary with a party on Tuesday that spilled out into the street.

Over nine decades, Martin's Tavern has seen its share of history and clientele. JFK proposed to Jackie in one of the booths, and there has been a long line of presidents making appearances since then.

Owner Billy Martin says it's the staff that makes Martin's Tavern the place it is.

"Out of 13 employees, I have 340 years of service. They're my family. Not my real family, but they're family," Martin said. "That's the backbone of this business. That's what holds it all together."

One tavern with four generations of Martins running the place, and a million stories shared over drinks between friends — old and new.
