WASHINGTON — Chuck Brown Day, the annual celebration of D.C.'s Godfather of Go-Go music, is bustin' loose and leaving the park which bares his name. The ninth annual party marking Brown's birthday is happening Saturday, Aug. 19, at Fort Dupont Park in Ward 7.
Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced the new location on Thursday. Chuck Brown Day is the largest celebration of go-go music in the nation and attracts over 4,000 people every year. Park officials say Chuck Brown Park was not made to host concerts, so moving the event makes sense.
This year's event will be held at the Fort Dupont Park Amphitheater, which has held concerts for years.
Chuck Brown Day is a celebration of Brown’s life, as well as the rich and original musical history of the District. Relatives of the singer will be present, along with the Chuck Brown Foundation who will host their annual “Back to School Giveaway” at the park, starting at 1 p.m. The event will also feature a kids fun zone and more.
The event will feature performances by The Chuck Brown Band, Backyard Band, The District Kings, DJ Kool and DJ Quicksilva. Food trucks and vendors will also be on site.
