WASHINGTON — Everyone knows the District loves its murals. There is some great art all over D.C.'s walls. Now, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser wants some more.
Along with MuralsDC, a Department of Public Works initiative to beautify the city through wall art, and the Anacostia Business Improvement District, the mayor put out the call for talented artists on her social media pages.
"We are looking for muralists to enhance the vibrancy of the Anacostia Arts and Culture District," Bowser said. "If you have a proven track record of creating large-scale murals, we want to hear from you."
Sound appealing, but looking for inspiration? Here's how the Anacostia BID describes its vision for the Arts and Culture District on its website.
"Our vision for the Anacostia Arts and Culture District is a feast for the senses that showcases our small businesses and collective communities' creativity, arts, history, music, entertainment, the sights and aromas of chefs preparing culinary morsels to taste, events, discussions, and more."
Last year, the D.C. government invested nearly $4 million into the majority-Black neighborhood in order to establish the new district. Officials claim the funding is being used for beautification and streetscape enhancements within the Anacostia Arts and Culture District, to support cultural institutions, and to provide programs and initiatives that support local artists by creating platforms that showcase their work.
Meanwhile, MuralsDC has helped create 165 murals in 72 neighborhoods around D.C. since its creation.
To apply for the latest project in Anacostia, interested artists are asked to email ashley@anacostiabid.org. The deadline to apply is Aug. 15.
